Ride to Rescue Childhood: 3 mountains, 250 kilometres, 24 hours

Ride to Rescue Childhood: three mountains, 250 kilometres, 24 hours and one special charity · 16 June 2018
Over the weekend of 16 &17 June 2018, a brave (some would say ‘foolhardy’) Allen & Overy team, Ride to Rescue Childhood, will attempt a special cycling-version of the Welsh Three Peaks challenge to raise money for our partner charity, War Child.
During the course of just 24 hours, we will attempt to scale three Welsh mountains – Pen y Fan, Cadair Idris and Snowdon – on foot, while cycling between each of them. That’s a total distance of just over 26km and 2000m of vertical ascent on foot, plus almost 230km on the bikes, featuring more than 3,600m of climbing. To try and give some perspective to this idiotic challenge we have set ourselves, the cycling element of this is some 30km further, and features only 1,000m less climbing, than the hardest mountain stage planned for the 2018 Tour de France. And then we have to also walk up (and down) three mountains! We will not have a guide, so in addition to the physical challenge of this, we have to also navigate ourselves around Wales, a good portion of it in the dark.
Ride to Rescue Childhood, consists of nine Allen & Overy staff:
- Juliet Chrispin
- Alex Hiendl
- Daniel Hunter
- Toby McCrindle
- Alastair McWilliams
- Hugh Robinson
- Ryan Sarsfield
- Jan Skuhravy
- Lewis Weaver
Brave though we all undoubtedly are, we are not taking this on just for our own dubious enjoyment. Rather, we are hoping to raise a not insignificant sum of money, which will go towards supporting War Child’s projects across 7 countries (Iraq, Afghanistan, Jordan, Yemen, Democratic Republic of Congo, Central African Republic and Uganda). Your donations will have a huge impact on all areas of War Child's work, from building the capacity of their global team, to directly enabling services and delivering sustainable projects to transform the lives of children living in conflict.
We have set ourselves the target of raising at least £400 per team member – this means that, if we hit our target, we would raise a minimum of £4,000 for War Child. Of course, we would love to raise more than that and are relying on your support and generosity to do so. Ahead of the actual challenge in June, please look out for other events that we plan to organise around our Bishops Square offices to support our fundraising efforts. We want you to get your money's worth.
War Child works across the world to protect, educate and stand up for the rights of children in countries affected by war. They help to keep them safe, give them an education, and equip them with skills for a better future, as well as campaigning on the root causes of conflict. War Child reached nearly 110,000 people in 2016, and as a result of their work over 46,000 children are attending 49 new child-friendly spaces, while another 20,000 were supported to access education opportunities they would not otherwise have had.
Please give generously to help us support War Child’s crucial work, which is currently across seven different countries.
