Willberry Wonder Pony was set up by an inspirational young event rider called Hannah Francis, when she was diagnosed with terminal bone cancer in 2015. The charity raises money for cancer research and to grant horsey wishes to young people suffering serious illnesses.
Hannah's bravery fighting her illness was truly inspirational and her death on August 1st 2016 was a tragedy. Her story can be found at http://www.willberrywonderpony.org She kept a blog throughout her illness - some of the details are heartbreaking...
My story so far.... Having hardly jumped before, even as a kid, I signed up for this crazy challenge in autumn 2016 with Remi, my ex-flat racer. We made considerable progress but Remi, bless her, gave me a fairly difficult time. Her flatwork wasn’t progressing as it should and jumping was, let’s say, hit and miss. I hit the deck a lot because she was prone to sharp, quirky stops. Sadly for us both, this turned out to be due to untreatable physical issues in her back, and I made the devastating decision to retire her from ridden work in June 2017. She is now very happily retired at the stud where she was born.
However, the progress I had made with Remi had shown me that I actually really want to do this, despite the knocks, the bruises, the shattered confidence and the broken heart saying goodbye to her. And so the search began for a new horsey partner and in November 2017 I found Cruise, an 8 yr old Irish Sport Horse. This challenge should be easy peasy for Cruise as he has already evented - however, partnered with me and my rock-bottom confidence, this will not be an easy ride for either of us. The Wobbleberry Challenge combines raising money for this amazing cause , with massive personal challenges. My confidence in myself and my riding is very very low, although improving now I think. I am working hard at regaining this and learning to trust and work together with my beautiful new horse, aiming to complete now in September 2018.
For those non-horsey people reading this, that means competing at an official British Eventing event, with phases in dressage, showjumping and cross country. We have been training hard, and I will need my Brave Pants, and the support of friends and loved ones, more than ever!
All donations go to the charity. All our training, transport and other costs are self-funded. This challenge will involve finding courage as well as technical ridden skills that I do not yet possess. But I’m working on it!!!! Hannah's courage in fighting her illness, and her determination to leave a lasting legacy, are my inspiration.
Please give as much as you can for this amazing cause! Thank you x
