Story
In April 2011 Eleanor Coneybeare was taken ill with meningicoccal septicaemia, a devastating infection that can be fatal and often leaves patients who do recover with long-term disabilities. She was admitted to Macclesfield Hospital and transferred overnight to Alder Hey Children's Hospital in Liverpool.
She has had to have her right leg amputated through the knee, as well as losing at least a part of each finger on her left hand, but she continues to do well.
That Eleanor survived this infection at all was due to the expertise, love and care shown to her by all the staff at Macclesfield and Alder Hey.
For this reason a team of former crewmates from Reading Rowing Club has come out of retirement to raise money for the Alder Hey Imagine Appeal- and take on what may be their toughest challenge yet!
Alder Hey's Imagine Appeal helps the staff at Alder Hey to continue their pioneering work in children's medicine. Funds raised are devoted to clinical research, meeting specialist equipment needs, providing facilities for families at the hospital, and improving the quality of life for children not just at Alder Hey but around the world.
Chris Jeffcoat, Dan Johnson, Duncan Coneybeare, Geoff Parr, Hugh Mortimer and Paul Hatcher have all raced and won rounds at Henley Royal Regatta together in the past. To raise funds for the Imagine Appeal, they have now entered the 2011 Coniston Challenge, a unique all-day event combining mountain biking, kayaking and hill climbing.
Saturday, 9th July, will see the RRC All-Stars tackling a 17km mountain bike race through the Grizedale Forest, kayaking across Coniston Water and finally racing 803 metres above sea level up the Old Man of Coniston.
