EMERGENCY APPEAL: PHILIPPINES
ONE OF THE MOST POWERFUL TYPHOONS EVER RECORDED PUTS 12 MILLION PEOPLE AT RISK
As super storm Haiyan batters the Philippines, Save the Children have mobilised our teams and emergency supplies so we can quickly reach the most vulnerable children and their families. The picture above shows families arriving at an evacuation centre, set-up in response.
“We expect the level of destruction caused by Typhoon Haiyan to be extensive and devastating. Children are going to be particularly affected, swept away in floods, hit by falling debris and separated from their families in the chaos. We expect thousands to be left homeless.” says Anna Lindenfors, our Philippines Country Director
Haiyan is a category five storm with sustained winds of 250kph, along with extremely heavy rainfall and a dangerous storm surge. Category five is the strongest possible typhoon and meteorologists believe Haiyan could be the most powerful storm to ever make landfall.
12 million people are estimated to be in the path of the typhoon. To meet the anticipated needs of children and their families we’ve allocated £18,700 from our Emergency Fund, which enables to respond quickly to disasters.
We have also launched an urgent appeal for £1 million to support our response activities in the hardest hit areas.
- Just £20 could provide 4 families in the affected areas with jerry cans to transport and store clean water.
- £100 could provide 2 families who have lost possessions or their homes with essential household items. This will include blankets, sleeping mats, mosquito nets, tarpaulin, buckets, rope, torches and children’s clothes.
- £240 could delivery 2 schools with basic recreation materials for children for three months whilst facilities are rebuilt. Each kit includes storybooks, stationery, skipping ropes, games, musical instruments, footballs and storage boxes. Up to 30,000 children can benefit from these supplies.
