Diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes aged 15 months in 2008. After being taken to Telford’s Princess Royal Hospital, he was transferred to Intensive Care at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, Liverpool, then back to Telford for his parents to be introduced to the world of finger pricks, injections and carbohydrate counting. Charlie is now treated with an insulin pump, which he wears 24/7. Everything that he eats or drinks has to be counted and insulin is given via his pump to match it. Throughout all this Charlie has been extremely brave and taken everything in his stride. He does not allow this to get in the way of doing the things his friends do and he is enjoying school which he started in September 2011.
JDRF
JDRF exists to find the cure for type 1 diabetes and its complications, and is the world's leading charitable funder of type 1 diabetes research. It was founded by a small group of parents of children with type 1 diabetes who recognised that insulin injections are not the cure for this life threatening and lifelong condition.
JDRF in the UK, affiliated to JDRF International (based in the USA), was founded in 1986. It is an independent charity with its own Board of Directors and registered with the Charity Commission of England and Wales.
At a global level JDRF volunteers and staff have been responsible for raising over £900 million to support type 1 diabetes research since the charity’s inception. JDRF raises money to drive world-class research to prevent, treat and cure type 1 diabetes and its serious and debilitating complications. For 40 years we have been fundamentally involved in the delivery of advances in this field; seeking out, assessing and monitoring the best science to drive the breakthroughs that improve management of type 1 diabetes and will ultimately cure the condition.
We recognise the challenges of living with type 1 diabetes and advocate to ensure that the condition is fully understood. We also provide information for families affected by the condition and encourage them to become directly involved in supporting research for the cure.
