Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
An aneurysm occurs when the wall of a blood vessel weakens and balloons out. In the aorta this ballooning makes the wall weaker and more likely to burst. Aneurysms can occur in any artery, but most commonly occur in the section of the aorta that passes through the abdomen. These are known as abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA).
I've chosen The Circulation Foundation as a charity as my Dad suffered with multiple Aneurysms. Besides having major surgery on a AAA to have stents put in to strengthen the vessel 7 years ago rendering him unable to go on any airplanes, he had major heart surgery in March to correct another going in to his heart and is still suffering the after effects.
My Uncle (Dad's late brother) had an aneurysm burst in his spine paralysing him from the waist down. Needless to say any more about why this is so important to me.
The Circulation Foundation is the only UK Vascular charity, dedicated to vascular health.
Vascular Disease is as common as cancer and heart disease and accounts for 40% of deaths in the UK. Often its preventable.
Even though vascular disease is so widely prevalent in our society, it is vastly underfunded in the field of medical research. The Circulation Foundation is working to change that by embarking on a focused programme of research which funds both established vascular research teams and young medical scientists and surgeons, so they can help build a stronger vascular research community in the UK.
Please spare a bit of change towards this cause and to animate me to get my butt across that 13.1 mile mark!
Thanks,
Trish
