Story
This is what it takes to give someone the gift of life:
· 1 well organised charity
· Voluntary Registration of the Bone Marrow register
1 match (Be a match, save a life)
· 14 + Blood tests
· 8 BIG jabs over 4 days
· 5 days of discomfort and aches
· 6 + hours of blood dialysis
All of the above is what to consider in order giving a terminally ill person a prospect of life.
On the 23rd April 2012 I went through a stem cell donation with the Anthony Nolan Trust http://www.anthonynolan.org and this was one the most rewarding things I have ever done, and will potentially ever do.
I do not know who the recipient was, but I had the indication that this was a young child. If the temporary inconvenience I went through will help to improve his/her survival chances, then it was well worth every minute.
A couple of days after the stem cell donation, I had no aches or pains and felt as if my body had returned back to normal. I have had no problems since.
I was inspired and humbled by the whole experience, so if any of you are able to donate blood, please also think about registering as a bone marrow donor. One day, you may also have the opportunity to give someone the gift of life too.
And now for phase 2…
During the experience, I decided that I wanted to do more to help the Anthony Nolan Trust, and as the London Marathon is one of their main fund raising events, I agreed to run on their behalf. This year’s London Marathon is on the 21 April 2013 and I have a target to raise £2000. With help and support from family and friends, I’m sure I can do it!
Many thanks and much appreciation for any support you can offer.
