We fund bone cancer research & grant wishes to seriously ill people #makingmemories

Story

In the autumn of 2017, I am going to be flying around a BE80 with my horse Haverlands Showtime for the Willberry Wonder Pony charity, hopefully after having raised lots of money for bone cancer research.

BE80 is the entry level of the sport of eventing - combining the three elements of Dressage, Show Jumping and Cross Country. On a single day I will ride a Dressage test, followed by Show Jumping over 7 –12 fences. Following that, I will get changed into cross country colours and body protector and head out for the excitement of the cross country test over 18 – 22 fences.

My friends and family will know I have been battling with confidence issues over the last few years. I have ended up in tears on more than one occasion whilst riding simply due to nerves. Add into the mix a young, inexperienced horse and there is a lot of work to be done in a year!

The Wilberry Wonder Pony charity was started by Hannah Francis, a talented young rider who had been selected for the rider development eventing pathway. In May 2015 she was diagnosed with aggressive osteosarcoma. Willberry is a soft toy horse, bought by her show jumping trainer as a mascot to be with Hannah through her rollercoaster journey. Hannah created a ‘wonder pony’ who wanted to share the cancer story. Little did Hannah realise that one year on, Willberry would have become a household name in the equestrian world, with tens of thousands of followers on social media and having raised hundreds of thousands for charity. Unfortunately, in August 2016, Hannah lost her battle, but her strength and determination lives on in Willberry.
