Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving Page.

Leukaemia is taking the lives of too many people I know, which is why I have decided to help raise money rather than just sit on my butt!

Karen Green was born in Nottingham and lived in the same village, Calverton, as my family and I.

In 1990 Karen married her husband Mick and 10 years later they had their first daughter Ellie followed by Jenni in 2005.

It was in 2007on Jenni’s second birthday that Karen was diagnosed with Leukaemia and it was that start of a gruelling few years of treatment.   Under the guidance of the City Hospital Karen set out on her battle to beat this with her brother Steve stepping in to donate bone marrow which meant everything to her.

For two years under the watchful eye of the hospital Karen carried on with life always smiling and caring for others and in spite of a relapse Karen bravely carried on for a further two and a half years living every day to the full, spending many hours with her mum and sister Jayne, talking, relaxing and dreaming.

A note from Karen’s husband Mick...

Karen was a very beautiful lady, both inside and outside and she radiated such love and peace that it was a privilege for all of us to know her.  Her uplifting and inspiring personality along with her positive attitude in the face of adversity helped and moved many people.

We were a typical couple who should have grown old together, sitting in front of the fire. We had a love and life which was rare and beautiful.

Over the last 3 years Karen became very spiritual. Her positive thinking, strength of character and the belief that miracles do happen, has left her mark on me Ellie and Jenni helping us cope with life. On behalf of Karen we want to give something back to help those people whose life change forever with a diagnosis of Leukaemia and also to help individual para-athletes realise their dream as sport is such a big part of our life. If we can help by giving a bit of what Karen was all about back then we will have done our job.

We are doing OK as a family unit but with a desire to succeed and help others gives us purpose and the will to carry on.

Karen worked at Shredall SDS Group for approximately 8 years as our Accounts Manager. She was hard working, kind, beautiful and so inspirational and courageous through this terrible illness.

She was such a hard worker but unfortunately due to her illness getting progressively worse after time off she decided she was too weak to continue.

During a life which was tragically cut short, Karen was an inspiration to those who knew her and a legend throughout the hospital that treated her with her strength, bravery and attitude to beat Leukaemia, a battle that was finally lost on July 4th 2011 after 4 ½ years.

Biking approx 300 miles in 4 days with only 8 weeks training, loosing post wedding weight, with a knee which has had 4 operations already will be pushing my boundaries and fitness but what I am doing doesn’t come close to what Karen went through. I am fortunate to have a healthy life and really want to give something back to these great charities.

Karen was a devoted wife, mother, daughter, and sister and nothing was too much trouble for her. Karen wanted to help others fight this cancer and so I wanted to do something for the Karen Green Foundation to try and help make this happen!

Leukaemia takes the lives of too many people. The Karen Green Foundation is a Nottingham based charity set up in 2012. They raise funds to provide excellent quality accommodation for families of those suffering the effects of cancer and other related diseases.

The accommodation is designed to allow families to “get away”, to share time and to make memories together in times of difficulty or hardship. During these periods it can be difficult to access time away and holiday care but the foundation aim to provide this in the easiest possible way.

All our fundraising activities are directed towards this aim, to improve in some small way, families’ experiences in extremely difficult times.

About the charity

Our purpose is to raise funds to provide excellent quality holiday accommodation for families of those suffering the effects of leukaemia. This accommodation is designed to allow families to “get away”, to share time and to make memories together in the face of illness or hardship.
