Story
This page is created in memory of Nick Maude on behalf of his friends Richard Perkins, Roger Morgan-Grenville and Simon James. 100% of the funds raised from this page will go to fund a PhD research assistant to investigate early diagnosis and treatments for kidney cancer through Kidney Cancer UK.
The following are Richard Perkins word about his friend:
My friend, wicket keeper, tennis opponent and comrade in lycra, Nick Maude, died on November 25th shortly after being diagnosed with untreatable kidney cancer. In contrast to the shattering speed of his last illness, Nick's legacy is one of calm, faith, steadfastness, humour and kindness and it seems very wrong that the world should continue on its way without him in it.
In July 2011 Nick and I attempted to cycle the Etape, a 208km days stage of the Tour de France in the Massif Centrale. It is extraordinary to think that just 4 months later he was no longer with us.
So to celebrate his life, to raise funds and awareness for this little known disease and to give myself a major challenge, I joined with two other friends of Nick, Roger Morgan-Grenville and Simon James to do something about it. 2012 somethings about it actually.... I committed to cycle 2012 miles in the 150 day period to the end of the 2012 Olympics which meant an average of almost 14 miles a day, each day, every day.
Having missed this by 115ml I fined myself £1 per mile and set up about riding the balance +1,000ml penance (to make a total of 3012ml). This was completed up the driveway of Yarnhams, Nick and Ali's house nr Alton on December 30th.
Roger, Simon and myseldf have pledged to raise £50,000 to start up an early awareness campaign For KCUK for the disease in Nick's name for health care professionals and the general public alike. We have so far raised in excess of £40,000 and in 2015 through a Call My Wine Bluff event at Nick's old school and with the help of Will Parry cycling the 2015 Etape. and with your help we are confident of reaching that target.
Kidney Cancer UK is a small charity concentrating on a much neglected area of research and help. They intend with the funds raised by Roger, Simon and myself to set up a targetted Kidney Cancer awareness campaign that will have a real and lasting benefit in early diagnosis.
I will be keeping a blog to enable friends and supporters to laugh with, and at me, and sometime in the summer we intend to organise a cycling event in the autumn in Nick's memory.
