CARE TO WALK
This Novemeber, I am setting myself the challenge of walking 15 miles in order to raise money for Stirlings. Whether I do this walk alone, or with the few people who have taken an interest in joining me- my aim is to raise as much awareness as possible, and get as many people involved in different ways to do something
for our friends at Stirlings. To let people see them for who they are, and to donate some money towards the work that this trust already does.
After spending time working
at Stirlings for a year, and now 5 months volunteering- I have learnt a lot about the people living in OSJCT homes and their specific needs. I have been
made aware of the difficulties of living with dementia, and my compassion has grown for those doing so, as well as the people caring for them. I have seen
the challenges people face, and have empathised greatly with them. One of the things that has stood out for me the most is the restrictions dementia can put on what they are able to do.
I love seeing the residents able to express themselves by continuing to do the things they enjoy, whether it be joining in the homes activities like arts and crafts or group quizzes- or going out for the day. I admire the work that is done in order to make this happen, and I would like to contribute more to it myself.
I have realised how similar these people
are to us, that they are still individuals with their own ways of coping with their feelings, with their own values and lifestyles. I want other people to see this too. To not see them as just elderly and frail. But to see them as friends, who yes need our help, but have also lived and overcome the battles that we all have to deal with. People with dreams and aspirations, and
unbelievable strength.
The money raised from this walk will go to Stirlings Amenities fund. This money is used to pay for resources for activities in the home, and other outings and events for the residents. Our first event coming up is the residents Christmas Party, but the more we raise the more we can do for our friends at Stirlings!
Will you sponsor me to help make this happen?
