Story
On Wednesday 12th May 2010 my brother Jason Crockett passed away after an 18 month battle with cancer. He was just 29. In his memory, I am raising money for cancer research.
First Up: Flying
This summer I travelled to the Outer Banks in North Carolina where I took part in my first Skydive.
It's no secret that Jason was scared of heights. When we were in China together we watched someone bungee jumping off a bridge in Longqing Gorge, north of Beijing. He turned an interesting shade of white/green and told me he could never do something like that. Inspired by his self-diagnosed Acrophobia, I hope to do him proud by facing this challenge, and hopefully get a little closer to him.
Jason was a year older than me, and we shared many experiences. In addition to our childhood, we spent a year in China together when we were 17/18, we were in the same halls of residence at University in London, and lived together after. So much of my life and understanding of life came from the frame of reference that having him as a brother gave me. When he was diagnosed I took a 'sabbatical' for a couple of years to spent time with him and take care of him as he needed. It was difficult to experience cancer with him and it broke my heart to see him suffer so much. But there was never any question in my mind. The decision was made in my heart, that this was the place to be, by his side, through thick or thin, holding his hand or just sitting in silence.
I was devastated to lose him. My entire family grieved heavily for the loss of their brother, son, and friend. I miss him and still think about him every day.
I've taken the time to find positivity again, and come up with ideas to celebrate his life, our friendship and the love we all have for him. I was extremely nervous about doing this, and would not have considered such a thing under normal circumstances, but did it to experience something new!
I hope you can fine a couple of dollars, pounds or euros to donate to the cause so that others in his position can get the care they need. The money raised will go straight to the hospital that treated Jason in London, St. Barts. The funds will go to the department he spent the most time in, the Bart's Cancer Centre.
