Story
From March 2nd to 6th, 2020, I and 99 HSBC colleagues from all over the world will be completing a five day, 100 km expedition in Quito, Ecuador to raise awareness of and funds for mental health initiatives.
- This spectacular 100km high altitude trek is not for the faint-hearted. It is physically demanding and culminates at 4,200m (13,780ft) above sea level, on one of the highest active volcanoes in the world.
- We'll be hauling our own gear, setting up tents each night, and going without showers for a week as we trek approximately 12 miles a day. It'll be worth it if it means we help people better understand the challenges with identifying and treating mental illness.
I also had the good fortune of being able to participate in HSBC's 2018 Charity Challenge (the Arctic Challenge in Greenland, which was in support of WaterAid and efforts to provide clean water to people in need around the world). Check out this short video on the expedition -
I'll be raising money this year for Royal Marines Mental Health (Promote, Protect, Prevent, Treat).
- Royal Marines have one of the most physically and psychologically demanding jobs on the planet and findings show lack of knowledge about mental health issues makes it more difficult to recognize a problem developing.
- While many of these are quickly recognized and dealt with effectively, certain mental health issues can go undetected for a long while, and as time goes on, they can impact on relationships with families and friends.
