Muriel's Jungle TREK to Siberut Island - Nov 2019, 4 November 2019

Story

What a crazier way to celebrate my 50th??

In November 2019 I will be joining an expedition of 11women organised by Women on a Mission (Singapore) to trek into the thick mosquito-infested tropical jungle of the Siberut Island (part of the Mentawai Archipelago in Indonesia) and spend a couple of days living with the Mentawai tribe.

We will be walking deep in mud 6/8 hours a day, camping in the depth of the jungle, drenched by torrential rainstorms and eating… well hopefully not the sago larvae that are the local tribes’ delicacies! After my trips to the Jordanian desert and to the Mongolian steppes, this third adventure with Woman on a Mission is definitely taking me out of my comfort zone. Being terrified of snakes and creepy crawlers, I am definitely in for a challenge !!

The ambition is to reach the off the map indigenous Mentawai tribe, wishing for their hospitality & to adapt to their way of life. They are also known as "flower people" for their way of decorating themselves with beautiful hibiscus flowers and tattoos. The Mentawai islands were totally isolated from the rest of Sumatra and South East Asia for thousands of years and the inland locals developed a unique micro-society, dedicated to the spirit of the forest and ancestors.

Why am I doing this?

My passion for the preservation and beauty of rainforests and century old trees takes over. And my desire to make a difference, however small, to women in the world that are victims of abuse/conflict/violence and need support.  I am fundraising for Women For Women International, an independent humanitarian organisation, that provides women survivors of war, civil strife and other conflicts with tools and resources to move from crisis and poverty to stability and self-sufficiency.

How does this fundraising work?

The WOAM Siberut 2019 team is looking to fundraise for Women for Women International UK (WfWI). All donations raised via JustGiving will be sent directly and in its entirety to WfWI. Like each member of our team, I am completely self-financing my trip.

I count on your support to bring confidence and hope to women in need.
Your donation is a solid start to turn their life around.

Why raise funds for WfWI?

WfWI is a non-profit dedicated to supporting women survivors of war, conflict and poverty, providing them with tools and resources to move from crisis and poverty to stability and self-sufficiency.

You can find out more about WfWI via their website: www.womenforwomen.org.uk  And please also please watch this video about them: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iarxgcit0gU

Since 1993, WfWI has helped over 478,000 women affected by war and conflict. WfWI runs programmes that work on both economic and social empowerment and teach vocational skills (e.g. tailoring, brick-making or poultry farming), protection, understanding of nutrition, sanitation and reproductive rights.
