We tackle poverty in the North-East to build strong communities & enrich lives

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page dedicated to raising funds to buy the piece of art entitled "Eleven O One" and affectionately nicknamed ‘Tommy’ by the people of Seaham.

‘Eleven O One’ is a moving sculpture depicting a WW1 soldier captured in the first minute of peacetime. Created by Ray Lonsdale, a local artist based in South Hetton, from corten steel and measuring 9.5ft tall and 1.2 tonnes in weight,  ‘Eleven O One’ has created a surge of passion amongst the residents of Seaham and those who have visited his temporary home near Seaham Sea Front.

Since ‘Tommy’ took up residence on Terrace Green on 29th May there has been a call from the community to purchase the artwork and as such, Mission 1101 was formed. Whilst ‘Tommy’ was loaned to Seaham for a three month period, it is currently for sale. In order to save our soldier we need to raise £85,000 as soon as possible Every donation, no matter the size, helps us in our mission. Remember, if you are a UK tax payer you can tick the Gift Aid box meaning we can claim 25% back on your donation!

County Durham Community Foundation (CDCF) provides grants which make a genuine difference to the lives of local people. They manage charitable funds donated by local individuals, families, businesses and trusts, building up a source of long-term support for the community and acting as the vital link between donors and local needs, enabling people to achieve far more than they could themselves. As such, CDCF is the ideal organisation to support the vision of the Mission 1101 Committee, the donations from the public and to transform all donated monies into a grant for Mission 1101 to purchase ‘Tommy’ on behalf of the people of Seaham. If we're successful in this bid, we will ensure that he remains on The Green in North Terrace, Seaham for locals and visitors to enjoy for centuries to come!

However, if we are unsuccessful in raising the necessary funds, Mission 1101 will use the money raised to commission another piece of art for Seaham. If we surpass our target of £85,000 we have agreed with the CDCF to transfer the money into Mission 1101's account to be used for the good of the people in Seaham and projects will be consulted upon with the local people.

If prompted please to put "TOMMY" as your reference when donating to ensure that the funds make their way to the right account.
