The story so far......
Newcastle NHS Charity is supporting a worthy cause concerning a close friend of mine. In 2011 Pete Dowen was diagnosed with Aciner Cell Pancreatic cancer.
Pancreatic cancer is diagnosed in 6000 people in the UK annually and is the fourth most common cancer.
Acinar cell cancer of the pancreas in a very rare type of pancreatic cancer representing <1% of all pancreatic cancers. Only about 10-25 cases per year are diagnosed in the UK.
The treatment for these are cancers is surgery (where possible) and chemotherapy. In practice the chemotherapy that is given to patients with ACC is given to them as it is the chemotherapy that has shown, in trials, to be effective in treating patients with the most common (>95%) types of pancreatic cancer (adenocarcinoma).
The optimal chemotherapy to give to patients with ACC is not known.
The money raised by Newcastle NHS Charities for Pete's Pacreas Project aims to fund a research team at the specialist surgical centre at the Freeman Hospital Newcastle and aims to:
· (1) Set up a UK registry of ACC based at the Freeman Hospital.
· (2) Collect treatment and outcome data of patients with a diagnosis of ACC.
· (3) Facilitate the movement of tissue samples from other specialist centres to the Freeman Hospital for analysis.
Last year I ran the Tough Mudder course in Peterborough - I am going to keep going because we NEED to reach our target and get this pioneering research off the ground.
