Save Royal Brompton Hospital's Children's Cardiac Services A review of children’s heart services in England has recommended that Royal Brompton’s heart surgery for children should stop. If heart surgery stops at Royal Brompton, all other services for children will follow - it simply won't be viable to carry on doing them. There will be further knock-on impacts which will affect all the hospital’s patients. The Brompton Fountain, a charity that supports families and children, is launching a campaign to save Royal Brompton Hospital’s children’s cardiac services. For more details about the review and the proposed changes, go to: www.thebromptonfountain.org.uk We aim to raise funds to cover the costs of running the campaign, including promotional materials and other fees incurred. Our baby boy Alexander was born together with his brothers Richard and Edward at 25 weeks 6 days on August 14th 2011 it was horrendous when 2 days later Richard passed away! Since then we learned a great deal about Neo Natal Units. Alex & Eddie were both diagnosed with a PDA which is basically an extra blood vessel outside the heart that is supposed to close off once they are born, due to the prematurity of the boys it hadn't done so! It is only now beginning to close itself off. The other irregularities these two little boys have are Eddie had a VSD a hole in the septum ghat seperates the two bottom chambers of the heart! At one point we were worried that he might need surgery for this, fortunately this was and is not the case he seems to be recovering & the hole seems to be closing! Alex is having different problems, he has what is called a pulmonary stenosis, which is a narrowing of one of the valves of the heart. This however does not rectify itself. It will have to rectified through a surgery at some point. the best possible place for this procedure is the Royal Brompton Children's cardiac centre! The picture added to this is of Alexander! We now have a possible window of 2 to 3 weeks to get him to the required weight to enable the team at the Brompton to carry out the procedure in a less invasive way, otherwise Alex would have to have Open Heart surgery which everyone really would to avoid!!!
