My daughter, Lauren's boyfriend Ashley (24) was diagnosed with a Melanoma 2 1/2years ago. After surgery, he was given the all clear.
However, early in 2014 a lump was found under his armpit. After many scans and tests it was decided that on 26 February he would undergo surgery in Frenchay Hospital, Bristol. During the surgery a 4lb mass was removed; including 5 lymph nodes which had been taken over by the melanoma; it was suspected that the melanoma had remained dormant in his lymph nodes since 2012.
Following surgery Ashley was referred to Cheltenham hospital for radiotherapy for 4 weeks completed 13th June. More recently Ashley started getting a lot of pain in his lower back. He was sent for a scan to find the cause of the pain where, unfortunately they found 3 spots of melanoma in his lungs and had 'activity' in his lower back and rib. On 11th July Ashley started 18 weeks of chemotherapy.
Macmillan have been so amazing; helping Ashley and Lauren and also his family. Over the past years they have given practical and emotional support and financial assistance. They have also provided access to counselling and respite. They've allocated Ashley an incredible nurse, Louisa, who is always on the end of the phone for medical and personal support
A Macmillan nurse costs £203 per day, which must be primarily funded through donations and fund raising initiatives. So, the more raised for Macmillan will provide more nursing hours for patients and their families all over the UK.
