7 years ago, Helen's uncle David was diagnosed with bowel cancer. Bowel cancer is one of the most common types of cancer diagnosed in the U.K. Sadly within a matter of months he lost his battle - following diagnosis, David spent a lot of time at the Royal Marsden and benefitted from the world leading support and treatment under their leading research centre and Professor Cunningham's steer.
Professor Cunningham and his team aims to increase cure rates and improve survival with smarter, kinder treatments that reduce immediate and long-term side effects and allow patients to live well with and beyond cancer, throughout the U.K. and beyond. The Research Fund was established to provide support for research into the treatment of gastrointestinal tract cancers and lympohma involving and collaborating with other national and international centres in the process.
Across the U.K. there is now better treatment and better screening. The risk of bowel cancer rises steeply from around age 50-54 and rates are significantly higher among males than females. Earlier this year, screening in England was offered from age 50 to improve early detection to fall in line with Scotland and other international standards.
Only through the generous donations can this work continue. Any funds raised will go directly to the Research Centre.
