Story
Members of the Cathedral staff have formed a team and are participating in the sponsored Booth Centre Sleep-Out on Friday 9 November. We are hoping to raise funds for the Booth Centre so please give what you can!
The Cathedral staff taking part are as follows:
Reverend Rhiannon Jones, Canon Andrew Shanks, Jo Hooper, Jade Newbury, Katy Leese, Christopher Stokes, Gareth Screeton, Jeffrey Makinson, Hannah Currin, Canon Tony Hardy, Carol Langhorn, Lindsay Cooper.
When summer remembers itself and the sun adheres to its job description, and we find ourselves hot and sticky and thinking how nice it would be to sleep outside, we are privileged to have the option. Because for a good number of people in the city – more than is morally justifiable – there is no option.
For them, sleeping out in the sun, the rain, the heat, the cold has become the norm. And it’s often down to places like the Booth Centre and its faithful, enthusiastic staff to try and help people who find themselves in this position to make the necessary changes and choices that will lead to a life off the streets.
Since its opening seventeen years ago on the lower south side of the Cathedral, the Booth Centre has helped numerous men and women to get back on their feet and it provides an invaluable service in a city where such resources are at a minimum. If you’ve ever been down the centre, you’ll know that it has Tardis-like properties. Otherwise, how could you fit so much in such a small space – cafes, music groups, education workshops, job-seeking sessions - to name but a few! Bigger premises would mean that more services could be offered and more people in need helped – and that’s where you come in!
