We are helping thousands of African women to access quality healthcare services.

Story

On Sunday I will be walking up Snowdon (1,085 m) with the weight of a full term pregnancy (about 3kg) on my tummy, in aid of Freedom from Fistula, a charity that aims to provide maternity care for women in Africa who don't have access to the emergency care they may need when in labour.

Women suffering from obstructed labour often struggle until the baby dies.  During this agonising process loss of circulation causes tissue to die, leaving large gaps between the birth canal and bladder or rectum, causing incontinence.

Most women and girls suffering with obstetric fistula are ostracised by their families and communities as they smell and are constantly wet, leaving them to live as outcasts.

Freedom From Fistula offers these women emergency healthcare during their labour, fixes the fistulas that have been a complication of previous labours and offer these women psychological support for what they have been through. Furthermore, the charity trains these women in basic skills that will enable them to return home and get a job to provide for themselves in the future.
