Ever since taking up running in 2005 I think I've probably become a bit of a fundraising bore, but this is possibly one of the biggest challenges that I've personally undertaken for many reasons. I've run 3 marathon's previously, but having been mugged in September last year I've found running outside to be a scary prospect and so have completed most of my training inside on a treadmill which has been extremely difficult so for me it was really important to run for an especially important and extremely worthy cause.
I've been a Guide leader now for 9 years and have had the pleasure of guiding with Sarah who is a great role model for all our Guides as a mother of two lovely children who works full time as a Health Visitor, but also finds the time to run our Guide unit. Just over a year ago Sarah received some terrible news - her 6 year old Nephew was diagnosed with a rare and very aggressive form of cancer.
Neuroblastoma is a very aggressive
childhood cancer. We know that it causes 15% of childhood cancer deaths
and that two children are diagnosed every week in the UK. Unfortunately,
long term survival for children with high risk neuroblastoma is less
than half the average rate for other childhood cancer and relapse rates
are high.
Despite Neuroblastoma being “high risk”
there is no Protocol in the UK for relapse neuroblastoma if treatment
is needed. More often than not children and their families are required
to raise money for treatment in either Europe or the United States. We
believe and hope in our hearts that Joseph will not require such
treatment and will be cured of this dreadful disease.
Joseph has responded well to treatment and currently his recent test results have show up as free from disease, however Sarah and her family spend a great deal of their very limited spare time continuing with fundraising as it could be needed at any time and they have some way to go to reach their £500K target.
Please spare any cash you can to help me help them to reach their target.
Thank you
Lucy
