Story
60 poets over 10 hours will be performing on Dec 11th at Komedia in Brighton. Each poet is asked to raise £250, so that people get to hear some cool stuff, but also before we've even started, £20K is raised.
I only found out this week that refugees in this country, if they make it through the 1 - 2 year detention centre nightmare, their homes in ruins, separated from family, lifelong community, their ways of life, get £36 - £40 a week to live on. Not money mind you, vouchers. And those vouchers have to cover everything from food to bus fares to clothes to nappies to sanitary pads. Most are not allowed to work so are forced to depend on this system.
A free therapy initiative with refugees suffering from PTSD is starting in Brighton soon, and one of the things we've been told is to expect them to turn up late, as many of them will have to walk 2 hours each way to get to their session, as they can't afford the bus fare.
I seriously hope I am never in that situation, but if I am, I definitely hope that there are a few people in the country I end up in who care to find ways to make my life more bearable.
The Refugee Clinic is all that, so if you have a few pounds spare then that would really be so appreciated.
My slot is at 12.40pm on Sun 11th Dec if you want to come down.
Thank you thank you.
