Story

We finished successfully on Wednesday April 3rd! Thank you so much for sponsoring us and hope to show you all pics very soon! X

We're setting off on our trek this morning, we just want to thank everyone for all the love and support they've shown for our cause. It means so much and will keep us inspired as we go, we've managed to raise a ton of money for such a worthy cause and hopefully in the future other women won't have to suffer in silence!

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.

On Friday March 29th we are setting out to raise money for the World Endometriosis Research Foundation (WERF), in six days we are going to tackle the entire 96 mile West Highland Way trail in an effort to bring awareness and raise funds for research.

"Endometriosis is a gynaecological condition where tissue similar to the lining of the womb, grows in other areas of the body, most commonly in the pelvic region. This tissue responds to hormones in the same way as the lining of the womb but with no outlet it can cause inflammation, scarring and adhesions, leading to severe pain and many other symptoms" (www.endometriosis-uk.org).

Laura (Wilson), one of the team members, was diagnosed quite late at the age of 27 when one cyst had doubled in diameter to 15 cm and the other to 10cm in just under 2 weeks.  She had an emergency laparotomy to drain the cysts, one of which contained 2 whole pints of blood. After the surgery she was diagnosed with having stage IV endometriosis on a scale that only ranges from I-IV.  There has been one laparoscopy since with another full laparotomy needing to be conducted to finally give some relief from the endometriomal tissue, adhesions (from surgery) and a frozen pelvis.

Before the latter surgery takes place Laura and some very close friends are going to hike the West Highland Way to raise money for a charity which supports women who have this condition. Another aim is to raise awareness so that women and girls do not suffer in silence and get diagnosed much earlier so they can have a better quality of life and preserve fertility.  Laura also wants to prove that even with this advanced stage of endometriosis, she can still conquer this challenge and many more in the future. Additionally, after the 96 miles, if the weather and conditions permit we want to celebrate by walking up Ben Nevis as a treat to ourselves!
