Story
As some of you may or may not know, I’ve hit the dreaded 30s (good few years back!). My metabolism isn’t what it was and unfortunately my waistline is suffering the consequences.
I’ve finally decided to do some exercise and go for a walk. Not any walk for that matter. A 160 mile walk through Sri Lanka. A walk with the likes of Ian Botham and other cricketing greats such as Steve Waugh, Allan Border, Saurav Ganguli, Sunil Gvasker, Muttiah Muralitharan, Mahela Jayawardena and Kumar Sangakkara to name a few.
This walk will be raising money for a very worthy cause. My country of origin, Sri Lanka, was blighted by a civil war which lasted over 25 years taking thousands of lives and forcing many Sri Lankans such as myself to leave the country.
Following the Tsunami Disaster of December 2004, Laureus began working with the Foundation of Goodness to develop the Seenigama Sport for Life Project. Seenigama, a village in the South of the island was in the direct firing line for the Tsunami and many people from the area lost their lives in the disaster. Sport is used as the means to tackle a wide range of social issues generating a positive impact on the region as a whole by building leadership and teamwork skills, introducing stability and a sense of enjoyment, increasing confidence and participation of females in community planning, increasing collaboration and information sharing amongst the villages involved and enabling the post-Tsunami healing process to continue.
In 2010 Foundation of Goodness expanded to a second site in Mankulum in the north of Sri Lanka to assist in the rebuilding of communities in the wake of civil war..
