Mental health issues are frequently in the media headlines at the moment. Dementia falls into this category and is an overall term that describes a wide range of symptoms associated with a decline in memory or other thinking skill. The numbers affected by dementia are predicted to increase alongside the ageing population. My dad has Alzheimer's disease which is the most common form of dementia while my mother-in-law has vascular dementia. Circumstances could be a lot more difficult but for the network of local support groups such as Age UK and Memory Matters together with  family and friends so a big thanks to those already.

I am planning to cycle from Land's End to John O'Groats over 14 days from 20th May - 2nd June. This is an unsupported, solo trip averaging around 70 miles per day.

Later in the summer, I'm also planning to cycle the 106 mile Cyclone Challenge on 17th June from Newcastle-upon-Tyne and attempt a 10k Total Warrior Obstacle Race on 5th August at Shap.

The challenges have two main goals; the first is to raise money for the Alzheimer's Society. The donations would go towards trying to develop a cure and until a cure is found, the charity intends to help inform society so those affected by dementia are supported and able to live in their community without prejudice. I also want to highlight other considerations which may help those with dementia but even more so, those who are acting as carers. Whether it's a knock on the door, a phone call or an offer for a change of scenery now and then, these can be a big help and it's heartwarming to know of such gestures which have helped to date.
