Story
If Carlsberg made little boys, they'd be like Olly. An inspiration, with drive and tenacity and a passion for foot massages! :)
At age 11, Olly- sporty, cheeky, funny, caring- was diagnosed with a brain tumour.... nobody could have anticipated it or how it would turn Olly's and his family's life upside down and inside out.
Amazing, dedicated and talented staff at Newcastle NHS Foundation Trust have meant that the operation to remove the tumour went well.... followed by radiotherapy and currently, chemotherapy...... it's all going well and Olly, being the little trooper that he is, is taking it all in his stride. BUT- just like Olly, he wanted to do something to improve the experience of patients of a certain age and their families in the future.... as he says:
"At present there is a massive contrast between my age group and the modern teenage unit.
I want us to have a voice !! The money raised is to be used to improve life for kids 9-13 years old in the RVI Children’s Cancer wards and within Radiotherapy at the Freeman.
We can then improve services for us like better food, comfortable beds for our parents, a chill out room, less dinosaurs and monkeys on walls,a better kitchen and internet and TV that actually works !!!!
I met with some of the top people from the Great North Children’s Hospital at the RVI yesterday with Mum and Dad. They really listened to my ideas and want my input to engage the opinions of my fellow patient".
It has and continues to be a phenomenal journey for Olly , but he continues it with his cheeky sense of humour and drive to beat the cancer- and get back to his football..... so, the training starts now and I'll be joining the rest of Team Olly to raise funds for the Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Charity (reg.no 1057213) and two of its charitable funds, the Great North Childrens Hospital Foundation, ward 4/14 based at the Royal Victoria Infirmary and Charlie Bear for Cancer Care which supports the Northern Centre for Cancer Care at Freeman Hospital.
Any amount, large or small - it all helps - whatever you can spare. Knowing I've got the support will spur me on and enable me to help make a difference for other families whose children are battling with this horrible disease.
