Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

I am raising funds for Yeldall Manor by taking part in the Walk for Freedom which will take place on 10 May and will follow a 27-mile route along the Thames Path from Windsor Castle to Yeldall Manor.

The walk is to raise money for the Good Samaritan Bursary Fund, which helps those men who cannot otherwise obtain funding to access Yeldall’s life-changing rehabilitation programmes.

Why Am I Supporting the Yeldall 2014 Walk for Freedom?

At the end of last year I was part of a big family reunion.  My Dad is the oldest of 13, and even allowing for those who couldn’t make it there were 98 of us gathered for a weekend!

I had a chance to spend some time with one of my uncles, who has for the last 18 years or so, lived in Australia, an had come especially for the reunion. At some point during his thirties he became an alcoholic.   I have distant memories of that time, with no one really knowing what to do or how to help him.

He did however have the unswerving help, love and support of his daughter, who just never gave up on him.  She would drive around the streets at night looking for him in shop doors and railway stations, to bring him home and give him another chance to be safe and get sober.  He talked about his daughter with great emotion, calling her “His Angel.”  On the Saturday of the reunion my Uncle  celebrated his “20th birthday,” twenty years of being sober.  An important part of the celebration was a phone call from his daughter who was back in Australia. my Uncle says he would never have got through the early days of being, and staying sober, without her.

Not many alcoholics have this kind of care in their lives, and for many men struggling with alcohol and other addictions, help, love and support are often in short supply.

Yeldall Manor does amazing work with men struggling with addiction.  They provide an environment that generates motivation, accountability and community and helps men build lives free of addiction.  By supporting me or someone else doing the Yeldall Walk for Freedom 2014, you will be supporting the Bursary Fund and through it, offer hope and freedom from addiction for the men who access it.

Thank you
