We offer free support to people with cancer and their loved ones

Story

So to cut a long story short, 2 years ago, my husband was diagnosed with cancer (a squamous cell carcinoma).

Unfortunately the week before my husband underwent a major operation that would see him out of work for months, I was made redundant from my employment. Panic set in as we now faced financial uncertainty.  I went to Maggie's to see what help we could get. Walking in those doors was incredibly difficult.   The lady I spoke to was so approachable and comforting and immediately set about finding solutions for us.  Maggie's was an enormous help when I was at my lowest.

Anyway, he has his op, and there were some complications, but eventually he healed and I got a new job at a school, which I enjoy and that enabled me to be there for the children and Dave.  He then had radiotherapy.  Last Christmas we thought his treatment was done.

Sadly, there was more cancer.  Which meant 4 further operations, that took us to London to the specialists, quite an upheaval for the family but we got through it.

By the summer the operations were done, the treatment to rid him of the cancer was complete.  The surgeons had done their amazing work and taken away the cancer, he was then left to live his life.  Unfortunately the life my husband is left with is not what it once was.

I guess the point of this quite personal note is that it’s not just the treatment that is hard, it’s hard emotionally once it is all over.  Maggie’s were there for me, and they were there for my husband when he was at his lowest, when the realisation of what cancer has taken away from him, from us, hit him hard.

We are thankful to Maggie’s for their support through this and my swim is my way of saying thanks.

So, family and friends, you have been amazing, in lots of ways these last 2 years, please continue to support us by helping me to raise some money and show your support for Maggie’s.

Thank you

Karen
