Story

In December 2018 I will be climbing Mt Everest.........base camp. Yes, I know. I should just go to the top, but my mum said I’m not allowed. The 12 day trek will be both challenging and stunning, seeing some of the most beautiful scenery in the world.

However the real reason behind this expedition is to raise money for the Rohingya Muslims who are being subjected to ethnic cleansing in Myanmar. Inshallah I am aiming to raise at least £4,500, via The Penny Appeal group.

Although awareness of this devastating and horrific situation has only recently surfaced through mainstream media, the Rohingya community have faced torture and affliction since Myanmar’s independence.....

Military brutality has led to the burning down of complete villages, rape and murder of women and children and resulted in approximately 700,000 or more Rohingya Muslims fleeing their homes and seeking refuge in neighbouring countries. In the months following the initial burst of violence it was estimated around 6,700 people were killed. At least 750 of these were children. Killed in the most horrific ways imaginable.

Many of the refugees now find themselves seeking refuge in the Bengali District of Cox’s Bazaar. The money that is raised will go towards the provision of shelter, food, water, and medical care for the refugee community at this camp.

Here are a few facts about the conditions facing those fleeing terror:

1. The Kutupalong and Nayapara refugee camp in Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh, houses over 1 million refugees, making it the world's largest refugee camp.
2. As per a report by UNHCR, each individual house, made for 10 people, is currently housing 20-30 people.
3. Since many refugees reside in makeshift camps alongside the shelter, nearly 100,000 vulnerable families are in life-threatening danger from landslides, and floods, due to the fast approaching monsoon.

Please donate generously to this worthy cause. The suffering and trauma inflicted on these people is irreversible, but we wish to bring them some hope and comfort in their day to day existence with your help.

As a group, The Penny Appeal group trekking to Everest Base camp is aiming to raise around £250,000 through your generosity.

Please can you pass this message on to friends and family that may also be interested in supporting this cause.

Many thanks for taking the time to read this and your help and support.
