Thanks for taking the time to visit my just giving page
It was The 14th June 2018. I asked the radiographers, who had performed my 5 year old daughter Pixiebelle’s first full brain scan, if I would receive the results right away. I was advised it would be at least a few days before we got the results as they need to be seen by the doctors to be analysed. Just as I was anxiously collecting my belongings from the locker room an important looking lady entered the room, the neurologist. I went instantly numb and was told to take a seat. “We have found a mass” she said. I pleaded the lady to stop talking to me, and demanded her not to say it! I couldn’t bare it, my baby girl, my baby girl is all I could think about. I stood up from my chair and ran.
Pixiebelle was admitted immediately. The world outside continued as I felt lost and contained in this unbearable traumatic situation. What followed was 2 lots of brain surgery and a diagnosis of a pilocytic astrocytoma, a rare benign brain tumour typically found in children. Due to the location, the brain tumour is inoperable. Pixiebelle’s 84 week course of chemotherapy was to begin on the 10th July.
As a parent I felt and still do feel helpless. The knowledge and care from the doctors and nurses at the RMCH is imperative. The work they do here is amazing and the care they have been providing for us as a family has been what we have needed in the most testing of times.
The hospital is currently campaigning to raise money for a new intramural-operative MRI scanner. The iMRI Scanner Appeal aims to raise £4m to purchase state-of-the-art intra-operative Magnetic Resonance Imaging (iMRI) equipment that will revolutionise surgical care at Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital.
To give back to the hospital I have signed up to run the Manchester 10K on the 19th May 2019 in the hope of raising some money towards the scanner appeal. This is a huge challenge for me as running is not something i would normally do.
