Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page. I am raising money by running the Brighton Marathon on 15th April 2012.
Just over a year ago I was diagnosed with primary Lymphoedema in my right leg. You can read more about the impact of this condition on me via my blog http://theswellsup.blogspot.com/.
Lymphoedema is a swelling that develops as a result of an impaired lymphatic system. Unfortunately, most of the underlying causes of lymphoedema are irreversible and as such, there is currently no known cure. Left untreated the swelling over time becomes more permanent and the area begins to feel increasingly hard and solid due to the build up of proteins as well as fluid in the tissues.
Correct diagnosis and appropriate treatment is essential (google "lymphoedema" to see the shocking images of what can happen if the condition is left to worsen). Unfortunately, there is still a major lack of medical knowledge and expertise and some people are still told 'there is nothing that can be done to help'. However, with the ceaseless campaigning to raise awareness of the condition by the Lymphoedema Support Network (LSN), more and more people affected by lymphoedema are now able to access effective treatments.
The LSN takes the lead role in educating and supporting other patients with this condition by providing a high standard of information and promoting self-help. Since its inception in 1991, when there was very little information or help available for patients, the LSN has evolved into an independent and influential charity. It is the only national patient-led organisation offering information and support to people with this condition and has a unique understanding of the patients' experience.
In a sea of anxiety after my diagnosis, the LSN provided a much needed safehaven and their wide ranging fact sheets were invaluable in helping me come to terms with, manage and control my condition. The desire to give back to this remarkable organisation is why I am running the Brighton Marathon in April.
The LSN is a membership organisation and receives no statutory funding. The Charity relies solely on membership subscriptions and donations to continue its valuable work. So please dig deep and donate now.
