Jost's Big Walk 2019

The Big Walk 2019! · 28 June 2019 ·
I’m taking part in the Big Walk 2019—a 37 mile (60 km) long walk through the Peak District on 28 June. It’s a tough challenge, but I think I can do it.
In the Big Walk 2018, I walked a marathon; in 2017, I walked 34 miles. It was long and painful but I did it. This year, however, I want to go even further—literally! Walking 37 miles (60 kilometres) means getting up at dawn, leaving Sheffield at 7am and then walking, walking, walking until after sunset. Walking through scorching heat or pouring rain; uphill in rocky terrain or fleeing from agitated cows while trying to avoid literal bullshit.
I need your support for this: After 20 miles or 25 miles or 30 miles, giving up will seem so sweet and tempting but I mustn’t do it; I must keep on walking—and your donations will play a big part in keeping me motivated!
Why am I doing this?
1) The Higher Education system in the UK is badly broken and students without rich parents can amass over £50,000 of debt at the end of their degree. I can’t change the UK government’s policy, but I can make a difference locally by raising money for student scholarships to give students from disadvantaged backgrounds the same opportunities I had!
2) This is the 4th time I’m taking part in the Big Walk. Every time, it brings out the best in our university community—working together for a common goal while getting to know each other across departmental boundaries.
3) … alright, I’ll admit it: I love the Peak District and this is a great excuse to go walking there! ⛰🏞💚
