Story
Many of you know I look after senior patients in hospital. They're stoical and tell good stories. Sometimes they get a little muddled. An unfamiliar hospital environment with strange happenings can be disorientating for anyone, especially for patients with dementia. Sometimes patients with dementia become so disorientated in hospital that they can become even more poorly and behave in very strange ways.
We're raising money to make our elderly care wards more 'Dementia Friendly'. We went to make a hospital admission for forgetful senior patients as minimally distressing as possible. We want to have clear orientation boards telling them the date and time. We want the ward decor to be pleasant and calming while making it clear where to find important destinations like the loo. We want to avoid patterned floors and curtains that can be misinterpreted as having insect infestations.
We feel that a ward that is 'Dementia Friendly' affords senior forgetful patients the respect and dignity they deserve.
