Story
To raise money for Teenage Cancer Trust I will be playing in the UK Charity All-stars Ice Hockey tournament 2022. This is taking place at Ice Arena Wales over the weekend of the 30th/31st July.
In 2019 I was diagnosed with COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) a group of progressive lung conditions that have no cure. The good news is that with a healthy diet and exercise i can mitigate the effects of the disease to live a long and fruitful life, though the diagnosis has given me pause to reflect.
Had I been a celebrity, no doubt I would have suddenly taken an acute interest in my illness and use my fame to go into fund raising overdrive to help find a cure. But, A) I am not a celebrity, and B) I always considered this to be rather selfish, wondering why have they not used their popularity to help some other group who are struggling with the myriad of life threatening conditions.
Having always tried to live my life by the standards that I have espoused in the pub, this is not going to be a plea for money for Lung charities, which would be hypocritical on my part. Instead, I have elected to raise money for the Teenage Cancer Trust, a cause far more important than my own old person’s illness. I cannot think of a group of people more deserving of the best of help. Life is complicated enough for our teens, stood as they are on the cusp of adulthood, only to have to battle life threatening illness and ghastly treatments. And that is before covid stole a very important chunk of their youth.
UK Charity All-Stars Ice Hockey 2022 is a weekend ice hockey tournament at the Ice Arena Wales , where mixed ability players raise money for a number of great causes, with over £880,000 raised since they began the competition. I am a part of Team Barbarian, and together we will be raising money for a number of charities. So please feel free to donate straight away to my just giving page, and watch this space for more fundraising activities
