Story
Dimbleby Cancer Care was set up after my father's death in 1965. The aim was very simple: the make life better for people living with cancer. 50 years on we do this primarily through our work at Guy's and St Thomas' hospital.
When my father was being treated at St Thomas', his one complaint was with the hospital pillows. So my mother brought in comfortable pillows from home for him. Today one of the things we do is give out Dimbleby pillows to patients who are accessing the Dimbleby Cancer Care Information and Support Services. A very simple thing that makes a huge difference to people.
The practical and psychological support services provide information, welfare advice, psychological support and complementary therapies to help patients and their families. It's now estimated that 1 in 2 of us born after 1960 will face a cancer diagnosis. And as treatments improve, we are living longer with the effects of cancer. This makes the work we do even more vital.
This event hopes to raise £50,000 towards our £500,000 Care For The Future appeal to continue supporting the information and support services when the new Cancer Centre opens at Guy's in 2016.
