Fundraising for Deafblind Scotland
Thanks for visiting our fundraising page.
Over 2 years ago I and my 2 guide/communicators Gina and Margaret faced a terrific challenge of the Great Wall of China trek which was absolutely amazing. I am afraid I have been bitten by the bug and once again have decided to venture forth before my sight goes completely along with my fading hearing.
Machu Picchu beckons and I have responded and have registered to go next April 2014. At present I need to coerce and cajole another Guide/Communicator who is brave enough to put up with my idiosyncracies (or should that be idiocies?). If anyone else fancies going along to share the experience of this wondrous place then please contact me.
Deafblind Scotland is a Scotland wide charity that works to support adults who have lost, or are losing both their sight and hearing. Apart from providing information and resources to deafblind people the most important thing that Deafblind Scotland provides is the Guide/Communicator service - basically highly trained people who act as eyes and ears for the deafblind person. The target is to raise funds to help them achieve the aim of seeking, " a society where deafblind people have the support and recognition necessary to lead fulfilled and active lives in which they can reach their full potential"
I have Usher Syndrome which means I was born with a severe hearing loss and have a visual condition called Retinitis Pigmentosa also known as tunnel vision. This condition is progressive and eventually all useful sight and hearing will deteriorate. I want to see as many sights as possible before this happens and Machu Piccu is one of them on the Bucket List!!
I have been with Deafblind Scotland since 1999 and have been involved with many different projects over the years and watched it grow and reach out to many members across Scotland. We have been operating out of outdated buildings that are not really fit for purpose and accessible to our members so we have purchaed a plot of land and now fundraising for the "Field of Dreams" to build a centre of excellence that is designed around the needs of dual sensory impaired people.
