Story

Thank you for visiting my Big Walk 2019 page.

I am taking part in The Big Walk 2019 walking challenge on 28th June 2019 and intend to complete the full 37 miles starting and finishing at the University of Sheffield, and walking via the parks, Ringinglow, Houndkirk, Longshaw, Grindleford, Shatton, Ladybower, Derwent Edge, Low Bradfield, Our Cow Molly ice cream, and Rivelin, and back before last orders at the University Arms.

I have not walked this far in one go, ever, before, and am both nervous and excited.  I am walking for students because I believe in supporting them through the financial minefield that is University.  I see students from weathly backgrounds enjoying university life and all of the extra-curricular activities that that involves.  I also see less fortunate students struggling to balance study with work in order to feed, house, and clothe themselves, and I would like to help a few avoid these hardships.  I was fortunate to attend University before the fees, with help from my parents, and to leave with a PhD and no debt.  The money I raise in this walk will contribute to scholarship to help a student study without financial worries and enjoy university in the way it should be enjoyed.

We are fundraising for student scholarships to give as many students as possible the opportunity to study at the University of Sheffield. Scholarships are vital to reduce barriers for bright students from disadvantaged backgrounds, giving them the opportunity to have a university education. Students who are from lower-income backgrounds often have to turn to loans to cover the cost of living, which can leave these students with debts £50,000 or more. Fear of these debts can discourage both prospective undergraduates and bright graduates from pursuing further study.

Please donate to my page to help give students the opportunity toi come and study in Sheffield.  Further information about the Big Walk and Sheffield Scholarships can be found at www.sheffield.ac.uk/big-walk .
