As a child, I moved house every two years or so and never liked the disruption.  As a small child, playing ‘house’ so I could create a place of my own was one of my favourite games and from my late teens onwards I asked for home-related things rather than fashion items for Christmas and birthdays.  By my mid-twenties, it was clear that the home I had created had become part of who I was.  My home is my sanctuary, it’s where I express my personality and welcome and nurture friends and family.  It is the most important ‘thing’ in my life.  I know how lucky I am to have a home like this and to live in a location which isn’t threatened by natural disasters.  Losing my home would be my worst nightmare.

There are a number of charities who provide essential disaster relief for those who have lost their homes through natural disasters like earthquakes, floods and typhoons but when I discovered ShelterBox I was immediately struck by their aim not just to provide an emergency house but to provide other things designed which enable a family to create an emergency home.  You can read about what’s included in a box here:  http://shelterbox.org/about.php?page=9

I decided to try to raise enough money for a whole ShelterBox, currently costing £590.  I hope you will help me.  I can’t do things like sponsored runs or even walks so I looked at what I can do and this raffle is one idea I came up with.

I am providing this piece of original artwork, entitled “Two Bright Fish” as a raffle prize.  It measures approx 37 x 54 cms, is ready to hang and has been treated with a fabric protector so is easy to keep clean by occasionally brushing with a soft brush.  The hanging is made mostly of silk habutai, which I first paint by hand and then complete with appliqué, machine and hand embroidery and beads, with hanging ceramic pieces at the bottom.  It would look good in modern or traditional settings.

For a small donation to ShelterBox (could I suggest a minimum of £5?) you have a chance to win the wallhanging, which is normally priced at £170.  If it wouldn’t fit in your home, why not try to win it as a gift for someone else?

I will draw the raffle on 28 March 2013 or once I have raised £170 in tickets, whichever is latest.

Note: if you would like to donate, don't forget to tick the box to allow me to contact you, in case you win!
