THE CHALLENGE

On 11th-15th August 2009 some friends and I will be attempting to cycle from one tip of Ireland to the other. Travelling from South to the North we hope to cover the 400 miles in 5 (or maybe 6) days. We're hoping for (and probably will need!) a good tail wind.

This should be quite a challenge, and I only have a trusty old mountain bike (18 yrs old) to help me. It has accompanied me on a number of other shorter trips, but this is by far the longest cycle I have attempted. My wife, Aine, has kindly agreed to drive the support car for us, so will no doubt will be learning about patience on the trip!

THE CHARITY

All monies raised will be sent to my chosen charity, which is :

'4lifethailand' www.4lifethailand.org

This is the UK branch of CCD (Christian Care Foundation for Disabled Children). In Thailand disabled children are often abandoned by their families and live their life in extremely poor conditions. The fortunate ones live in government-run homes, but even in these conditions are very poor and resources very stretched. The charity, through the help of volunteers, provides much needed help for these children, providing them with love and care. The main aims of the charity are :

To provide financial aid for the disabled and abandoned children in Thailand, through proving residential homes and daycare centres.

To reunite the children with their families or help them get adopted, so they can have a second chance to live a happy life.

To raise awareness for the plight of the forgotten children of Thailand.

To educate the general public about the plight of the disabled abandoned children in Thailand.

A friend of mine visited one of the charity-run houses (Rainbow House) during Easter 2009 and some local N.Ireland families have adopted children from Thailand, suported by this charity, and so convinced me of the great need that these children have.
