Refurbishing of St Mary’s Hospital Chapel
St Mary’s Hospital chapel was designed by the hospital architect, Thomas Hopper, and has been in existence since the 1840s but may not have been fully completed until 1884. With its rich stained glass, its memorials to former staff and its tasteful furnishings it has long been a restful and tranquil haven of peace for patients, staff and visitors. It is in regular use for services in the Christian tradition and has daily and Sunday Masses, both Anglican and Roman Catholic.
In recent years it has become in much need of refurbishment and a programme has begun to repaint the chapel, repaint and restructure the sacristy, provide new altar cloths and altar frontals, and a new set of priests’ vestments. The League of Friends have made a very generous donation but more funds are needed.
To raise funds for this project Fr Jim Mulligan, the Roman Catholic chaplain based at St Mary’s Hospital, will make a sponsored parachute jump on 8 February 2012 at Maidstone Airfield in Kent.
