Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page. I am aiming to raise a minimum of £3,450 for the forgotten victims of the 2010 Pakistan floods.
One year on from the worst flooding in living memory, thousands of the victims are still living in tents with only basic supplies, doing their best to survive amongst the terrible devastation. The water supplies are contaminated and the land is infertile which is impacting on the agricultural communities in the region.
At the time of the disaster Penny Appeal acted immediately, by distributing 32 tonnes of emergency aid. The charity is now aiming to help these forgotten victims by rebuilding communities and providing a lifeline so they can become self sufficient once again. We will do this by building houses; installing tube wells to provide a constant supply of clean water; offering small business funds to enable local businesses to operate again; and supplying aid packages to those who are still unable to provide for themselves.
Our initial fundraising target is £40,000 which will enable Penny Appeal to rebuild a small village in the Punjab province. The new houses will be of solid construction, built from bricks and cement and will be considerably more secure than the properties destroyed by the floods. Each house will have two bedrooms, a kitchen, bathroom, living area and a veranda and will enable another family to begin to rebuild their lives and to find hope for the future.
Between the 2nd and 18th of December 2011 (along with a group of volunteers), I will be trekking to the base camp of Mount Everest - the world's highest mountain at 29,035ft (8,848m), to raise £40,000 for this appeal. The Everest base camp itself stands at 5,357m. This outstanding challenge will take us through the lush valleys of Sagarmatha National Park. The trekking adventure will begin at Lukla, where we will trek to the Sherpa capital of Namche Bazaar following the trail across numerous rivers. The trek leads gradually uphill from Thyangboche, where we will reach a highpoint at Kalapathar (5,545m) with breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding peaks and glaciers including Mount Everest. Having completed the challenge, we will have the chance to explore the city of Kathmandu and its many temples and bazaars.
