Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
Myalgic Encephalomyelitis is a multi-systemic disease classified by the World Health Organisation as a Disease of the Nervous System (neurological). Some 250,000 people are thought to have ME in the UK – 25% are severely affected and 10% are children. Some are so severely affected that they cannot move, speak or swallow.
Jen, my wife became ill with ME when she was 7 and has lived with this disease for 23 years.
We are therefore doing a circular walk of the Lickey Hills in Birmingham to raise some money and awareness of the disease. We decided to do this because in all the years Jen has been in Birmingham she has wanted to walk there. However she has never been well enough to do so.
We are walking as part of the Walk for ME initiative. The idea behind Walk for ME is that friends and family of an ME sufferer do a sponsored walk on their behalf, hence the name Walk for ME or Walk for me.
Any donations we receive will be passed to Invest in ME, an independent UK charity campaigning for bio-medical research into ME. Their aim is to bring together people to campaign for research and funding to establish an understanding of the causes, effects and the depth of the disease in society with the eventual aim to develop a test for ME diagnosis and, subsequently, medical treatments to cure or alleviate the effects of the illness.
