Story
Thank you for visiting my page!
In August a team of four Cosmic Rays (Parviz, Lisa, Paul and myself) will be attempting to swim 21+ miles across the English Channel... and then back again! This (possibly crazy) challenge is all in aid of the charity Children of St Mary's Intensive Care (COSMIC).
The Challenge:
We will be starting our swim anytime between 9th and 16th August, likely with less than 24hrs notice! We will take it in turns to swim one hour slots until we reach France, and then turn around and do exactly the same back to Dover.
This endeavour will likely take us between 20 and 30 hours to complete, depending on tides and conditions. This means that we will definitely be swimming at night!
Yes, I am nervous about the sharks. However, I'm sure these will be the least of our worries when it comes to it... Cold temperatures, sea sickness, changing tides, jelly fish and the odd ship are more usual obstacles on a channel swim!
The Cause:
COSMIC supports the paediatric intensive care unit (PICU) at St Mary’s Hospital by helping patients and their families, and enabling the dedicated team to treat hundreds of children from London and across the rest of the country each year.
The PICU at St Mary’s Hospital was opened by Dr Parviz Habibi (Eagle Ray) in 1992 with just one bed. Since then it has grown into a busy 10 bed unit, saving the lives of children with life threatening diseases and suffering from acute trauma.
All children admitted onto the Unit are critically ill and need life support, treatment that could not be managed in a hospital without a PICU.
To support these children and families during the hardest of times, COSMIC helps by purchasing vital equipment, providing parent accommodation, supporting training for medical professional and fund internationally significant research into life-threatening childhood diseases.
Please help us to support this charity so that it can go on supporting these children. Any donations will be hugely appreciated. To find out more about COSMIC you can visit their site - http://www.cosmiccharity.com
