Team True Sprit takes on Iron Man!
We have seen some pretty special things in the world of triathlon over the years and there have been some epic feats of endurance that are often termed "heroic".
But on 22 July 2012 in the Lancashire town of Bolton, the sporting world will witness the true meaning of the word heroic. In an unprecedented move, Race Organisers of the Ironman UK Triathlon have granted entry to 10 teams of servicemen who through one reason or another, suffered injury serving their country and who are currently recovering at Headley Court in Surrey. These teams of servicemen and support staff will take on and try to conquer one of the toughest events in the sporting calendar. They will either enter as relay teams (completing one or two of the disciplines), or as individuals (completing all three).
The Ironman Triathlon consists of:
2.4 mile open water swim
112 mile bike ride, and
26.2 mile marathon
All completed with a strict time limit of 17 hours!
This is the True Spirit of the Ironman, the True Spirit of the serviceman and something that will set these athletes apart and earn them a place in sporting history.
Everyone involved in Team True Spirit are backing them all the way in their attempts to complete the race, but to also raise vital funds for “Help for Heroes", "Army Benevolent Fund", "Blesma" (British Limbless ex-servicemen’s Association), Royal Marines Association (RMA) and The Forces Children’s Trust. These charities all do fantastic work which supports our servicemen’s needs both now and into the future.
