Story
Thanks for visiting my JustGiving page. On 7 June, I walked 10 miles in the Leeds Castle, Kent Pink Ribbonwalk to fundraise for Breast Cancer Care. This was no mean feat, but nowhere near as challenging as facing a breast cancer diagnosis. Breast Cancer Care's mission is to make sure that no-one has to face their breast cancer diagnosis alone. The money I raised (and any I continue to raise during the next 2 months) will help to fund specialist clinical and emotional support to help thousands of people find a way to live with, through and beyond breast cancer.
I recently retired from 27 years working in Adult Social Care, Cumbria County Council. Much of my time during these years was spent sitting behind a desk most of the time every day, resulting in my weight gradually creeping up over time. Last year, following a Health Check, I was told I was at risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes - this was enough to give me the kick I needed to seriously start losing weight! So far I have lost 3.5 stones, but still have a long way to go.
A friend of mine who is also losing weight, but living in Kent, asked me if I was interested in doing this walk with her. While I have been losing weight, I have been going out during my lunch half-hour and walking briskly around the town, a distance of just over a mile. Now that I am retired, I will be doing more walking and preparing myself for this walk in June.
Still having a lot of weight to lose, this will be quite a challenge, but I am determined to succeed. Over the years, I have known several people, including some colleagues, who have had breast cancer and am doing this walk for them especially.
Please donate what you can; your support will help me get round the route and will make a huge difference to people affected by breast cancer.
Thanks!
Helen
