Story
Imagine yourself in the Sahara desert with nothing but rolling sand dunes for miles around. When you plough your feet through the sand, a fine dust kicks up. You can’t feel the sweat dripping down your face because it’s evaporating in the baking heat. Your lungs feel parched. Today’s temperature is over 50 degrees. Part of your brain is screaming at you to stop, right now, to drop out of the race, but the other part of your brain is stronger. The other part of your brain knows that when you complete the final stage of the Marathon des Sables, you will have run the equivalent of six marathons in six days, a total distance of some 240 km – 150 miles.
I'm ran/survived the 2014 Marathon des Sables for Yorkshire Cancer Research finishing in 301st place (20th lady). The Marathon des Sables is described as the world's toughest footrace, and while you are given water and a place in a tent to sleep you are otherwise totally self-sufficient, carrying all your fold and equipment.
I was lucky enough to begiven the opportunity of a place by the charity Yorkshire Cancer Research. I am honoured to have run for them and I am asking you – my friends, colleagues and family, to ensure that I smash the minimum target of £9,000 and raise as much for this truly worthwhile cause as possible.
Yorkshire Cancer Research funds world-class research to achieve the best possible outcomes for cancer patients and are committed to translating discoveries from the lab to patients (find out more about what they do on their website - see below for link).
All money donated here will go to the charity and not to fund my participation in the event. I'm also planning to organise several fundraising events - details will be added soon.
