Story
As a lot of people know, Anorexia, Bulimia Care is a charity very close to my heart, for whom I've volunteered over the past 6 years.
I don't have space to fully explain my feelings about Eating Disorders; the way they're dealt with by the NHS, perceived by society and the portrayed by the media!
In brief: I believe the biggest misconception about Anorexia is that it's a choice; a choice to be thin; a choice to starve; a choice to attract attention. In reality, Anorexia is a serious mental illness, a psychological problem that uses restriction, purging and excessive exercise to control weight, often because the indiviudual feels a distinct lack of control elsewhere in their lives. Over time this control becomes distorted and, perversly, the illness ends up controlling the individual; causing obsession, perfectionism and body dismorphia.
The myths and misconceptions around Eating Disorders still suprise and infuriate me, and I wish for better understanding of such a fatal illness.
That's why I volunteer for Anorexia Bulimia Care (ABC); not only to support sufferers and their families, but also because of their educational initiatives, designed to assist proffessionals, schools and agencies through online resources, workshops and youth-work.
The challenge I'm doing shows, to some small extent, what we can do with our bodies when they're well nourished and healthy. Above all, it's about using our health to have fun! All sponsorship will go directly to ABC to continue their great work. It's a very worthy cause so please please please dig deep and show them your support!
