Story

I have spent most of this year donning lycra and rubber more times than can be considered normal, have had to set my alarm at 4.30am umpteen times and dragged myself out of bed to brave training in cold lakes and the sea. I've travelled up and down the country for various practise events including, swimming races, 100 mile bike rides and half Ironman triathlons. I’ve run in the snow, come off my bike several times, spent god knows how much on nutrition that definitely isn’t Michelin starred and given up my social life. (I have honestly!)

In all seriousness, I consider all these things a very small sacrifice if it means my teammates, who have sustained horrific injuries whilst serving our country, can compete at Ironman UK this year and prove to themselves that they are no longer limited by their injuries.

The reason I've chosen FCT:

It’s tough enough being a kid with all the challenges they face. Life just gets a whole lot tougher when one of your parents is either killed or suffers disfiguring, disabling injuries. The taunts, the bullies and often the need to grow up and be in a very adult world long before they should means some children’s childhood is cruelly snatched away from them.

So please, let’s not forget the innocent one’s in this world. By donating to the FCT, they can use the funds to bring respite and fun to a child. YOU are helping to bring laughter and a face aching smile to a child who may otherwise be suffering in ways few of us will ever understand.

My training partner and teammate for the race is a below knee amputee who was injured when he stepped on an IED whilst serving in Afghanistan in 2011. This time last year he was my patient and I was taking him through the slow process of his rehabilitation starting with the very basics of simply standing on his prosthetic leg. A year on and with hundreds of miles of Ironman training under his belt, he has come a long way and is going to tackle his first Ironman, in fact this is his first triathlon! Insane, but then he is a Royal Marine.

 Thank You
