Story

Dear All,

Thanks for visiting my Just Giving page.

I'm running to raise funds for a charity that I'm passionate about, the UK Punjab Heritage Association (UKPHA). UKPHA works to promote the incredibly rich but under-appreciated heritage of the Sikhs and Punjab.

Its run by volunteers who always deliver world class events, exhibitions, books, websites and more besides. However it has no regular funding, staff or offices. Despite this it manages to achieve great results and helps bring this heritage alive for people of all backgrounds and ages. In fact the work they do has helped me enormously in introducing my kids' heritage to them in ways that engage and excite them.

UKPHA's latest project aims to bring together people of all backgrounds to tell the untold story of the Sikh contribution to the First World War as part of the global commemorations due to start next year for the 100th anniversary of the war. To do this they need to raise £50,000 from the public.

Sikhs contributed a massive part of India's war effort which in itself is a largely unknown story. This is UKPHA's greatest challenge yet and is truly something I feel deserves supporting. You can read more about the project below and on www.ukpha.org

UKPHA is a registered charity with HMRC (Registration No. XT33894).

You can donate online or by text. To donate by text simply text UKPH47 with the amount (£1 - £10) to 70070 form your mobile.

 About UKPHA

The UK Punjab Heritage Association (UKPHA) is a charity run entirely by volunteers. It seeks to promote awareness of and access to the incredibly rich but undervalued and often dangerously at-risk heritage of the Sikhs and the Punjab region of the subcontinent.

Over the last twelve years it has delivered major exhibitions, regional lecture series, engaging websites and inspired the creation of a specialist not-for-profit publishing company to further enlighten the world to this inspirational inheritance. It has worked with major institutions from the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) and British Museum to the BBC and the History Channel to educate and inspire audiences and deliver world class programmes, events and exhibitions.

Empire, Faith and War: Sikhs and World War One

Today it is primed to start work on its biggest project to date, a major three-year long commemoration of the role of Sikhs in World War One. In order to do so it will be working to create a major state-of-the-art central London exhibition and lecture series, a smaller regional touring version and events as well as a commemorative publication, interactive website and educational resources for schools. These will all be developed with the involvement of young people and a wide range of volunteers, both Sikh and non-Sikh.

To tell this untold story of the Sikhs and the Great War, UKPHA will be working with the community and heritage partners including the British Library and Imperial War Museum. To achieve its aims and ensure that the Sikh contribution is remembered it is seeking donations to help it ensure that their sacrifice is remembered and never again forgotten.
